Step by step

  • Step 1

    (1) Begin with a 3 meter length of wire. Leave a 20cm end and twist a row of 8 random beads into the wire. Two/three twists will suffice.

    (2) Thread the next bead onto the long end and bend the wire over approx. 4cms away from the last bead to create a 2cm twist. Grip at the base and twist the bead until it forms a neat twist.

Tip Don’t over twist or you will crack the crystals.

    (3) Repeat  (2) above,  alternating short and long twists, growing the length to the centre where the twist should be 5cms. Join where necessary by twisting the wires together and continuing in the same way until you reach your desire length. To tidy the joins refer to (7)

  • Step 2

    (4) Make another piece in the same way this time including 5 star beads on long twists around the centre area. It helps to hold this piece up against the first piece to establish where the middle is. Or begin in the centre and work out.

  • Step 3

    (5) Line up both pieces so that the beads are level and twist the wire ends together for 2.5 cms. Thread on one part of the toggle and bend to form a loop. Twist the loop to secure. Don’t finish the ends yet!

  • Step 4

    (6) Twist both strands together. At the other end make another loop as in Step 5, this time adding the other part of the toggle clasp. Before finishing the ends wrap any unused wire as individual strands into the necklace to add strength. Do this on both ends then refer to Step 7.

    (7) To tidy wire ends, twist to secure and trim the end to approx. 4cms. Make a small loop with the round nose pliers and then grip with the nylon jaw pliers to turn a flat coil and place alongside the beads.

  • Step 5

    (8) Arrange the beads by twisting and bending the strands into the desired position with your fingers. Leave some straight so that you can coil with the round nose pliers later.

    (9) Using the round nose pliers, coil some of the longer strands then pull out the coils. Separate the Star bead strands and lift them so they are higher than the other beads.

    Tips

Twisting and untwisting may cause the wire to fracture and snap

Twisting the two strands together can be fiddly. Place them flat, hold with one hand, grip in between the twists sections and turn the whole thing a full turn with the other hand

To shape the loops at on the ends, push the round nose pliers into the loop and roll around.
